When people first realise they are lesbian or gay, they often think no-one else is like them.
Estimates vary, but it's believed that between 2-10% of the population are lesbian or gay. If the figure was 10% for instance, that would mean there would be 30,000 gay people in Coventry.
Nothing is wrong with being lesbian or gay, but problems are created for us by the ignorance and prejudice of others.
Hundreds of people call us every year. Most are lesbian, gay, transvestites, transsexuals or unsure of their sexuality, the families of all these people also turn to us for help. Many of them have been so distressed, it has taken them weeks or months to pluck up the courage even to telephone us.
cwfriend helps lesbians, gays & trans to face the oppression that results from these attitudes and works with other groups to fight discrimination.
We are a voluntary organisation giving information, support and friendship to lesbians, gays, trans, their families and friends. Besides our telephone helpline, we offer face-to-face meetings, social groups, newsletters and printed information We refer people to agencies that can offer legal and medical advice.
We can provide diversity training for other groups, such as college/school students, counsellors, professional and social workers.
Our volunteers are not professional counsellors or psychotherapists. They are caring volunteers who have been trained in the art of listening and empathy. All volunteers are lesbian, gay or trans.
